the story
The Poker for Ponies event was created from a culmination of a daughter's volunteer experience and her philanthropic father who wanted to bring her idea to fruition. Here is Teah's story:
A passionate Grade 11 student at Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School, Teah had an incredible opportunity to volunteer at SARI (Special Abilities Riding Institute), an organization that now holds a special place in her heart.
In the role of a camp buddy, Teah immersed herself in the vibrant world of SARI, surrounded by amazing people, magnificent horses, and a truly exceptional facility. However, what left the most profound impact on her was the joy and transformation witnessed in the children she was privileged to assist during her time.
SARI, more than just an institute, stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for children with disabilities. The dedication of the staff and the unique therapeutic benefits of equine-assisted activities contribute to the positive changes that last a lifetime. It became unmistakably clear that SARI is changing lives in ways that extend far beyond the stables.
During her time at SARI, Teah became aware of the financial challenges the organization faces in pursuing its noble goals. The need for additional support to ensure the continuity and expansion of impactful programs became evident.
Motivated by the desire to make a difference, Teah shared her experiences with her Father, Jeff, who swiftly took action to create an opportunity for change. Realizing the former poker event that had once been a staple in London no longer existed, Jeff, alongside his friends Scott and Rick, saw a golden opportunity to fill the void. Inspired by Teah's heartfelt stories about her time at SARI and recognizing the urgent need for financial support to sustain and expand its programs, they decided to harness their passion for poker and community service by organizing a new tournament.
By stepping up to host this poker tournament, the Event Committee aims to create an annual event that captures the spirit of camaraderie and charity. This new tournament promises to be more than just a game of cards; it's a beacon of hope, a source of funding for crucial programs at SARI, and a testament to what can be achieved when a community unites for a common cause.
